Hugh Greenís Stirlingshire
An Exhibition to Celebrate the life and work of Hugh Green, an artist who was based in Bridge of Allan

Hugh Greenís Stirlingshire

The life and work of Hugh Green, an artist who was based in Bridge of Allan, decorator and friend of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, is celebrated in a new exhibition in Stirling. The Stirling Smith museum will exhibit Hugh Greenís place in the Arts and Crafts movement in Stirlingshire. As a winner of a Glasgow School of Art medal for textile design in 1915, Hugh Green was a founder member of the Stirling Circle of Arts and Crafts in 1928. His wallpaper, textile and linoleum designs will be shown together for the first time, with his fine watercolour landscapes.

The exhibition was managed and created by historian James Wedlake, who is at the end of his internship as part of the Museums Galleries Scotland programme, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. James researched into Hugh Greenís life and work, sourcing items for the collection from private ownership, negotiating loans and purchases, conducting interviews, digitising images, selecting frames, and writing a 19,000 word catalogue.

James Wedlake, intern at Stirling Smith Museum, said, "It was an honour to research into Hugh Greenís life and work. We hope that many people across Scotland will be drawn to Stirling Smith to see the exhibition in August and September to find out more about this fascinating man who had a big influence on textile design in Stirlingshire."

This special story of an artist-housepainter has won in kind sponsorship support from premier paint manufacturers, Craig and Rose (established 1829), with match funding from Arts and Business Scotland and Bonhamís Scotlandís International Sale Room.

Gordon McFarlan, Director of Bonhams said, "Until now the work of Hugh Green was so little known that is name didnít even feature in standard dictionaries of Scottish artists. This situation has now been rectified as a result of the work of James Wedlake and the Smith Art Gallery. Bonhams Scotland is delighted lend its support to this ground-breaking exhibition."
