Via dance hall, town hall, theatre. Channelling into our homes through television, film, radio and gramophone records. Stevie Pop's work is inspired by and features Scottish entertainers, pop music, advertising, signage, books, comic strips, British & US television, B films and more.
There's no big plan. I enjoy not knowing how things will turn out. I use acrylics, emulsion and car paints, felt pens, transfers, tippex, glue, plaster, filler. I like to paint on Hardboard and Plywood. Surfaces are scraped, sanded, scratched, hammered, gouged and thrown around until they look the part. I try to use any materials that are lying around. There's nothing better than finding an old bit of wood washed up on a beach, in a river or discarded in a skip.
When I was growing up we never got to art galleries very often although, I liked looking at the colorful paintings and reading the stories about Van Goch and other artists in Tell Me Why magazine. Down the lane at the side of the Regal cinema in Stirling, they used to display a collection of posters in glass cases to advertise coming attractions. When in town, I would wander down the lane and study these beautiful works of art that were displayed in a very public gallery.
After leaving school, I studied Building Surveying for four years then went back to college a few years later to study Visual Information Design and Multimedia. I never could decide what I wanted to do. Sometimes, I have been self employed and have also worked in a record shop, a sawmill, a cafe, a museum, a model making workshop and in communications and administration.
If you would like one of my pictures, let me know and I might sell it or suggestions Commissions are welcome including any opportunity to produce artwork/signage.
